Waxing during your time of the month can be a sensitive topic, one that you may not feel comfortable talking to your aesthetician about. If you’ve been wondering how to go about an appointment while you’re on your period, Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio is here to break down the etiquette for you.

Waxing on your period is completely possible and is performed more often than you think. With over 7.87 million Americans receiving four or more wax treatments in just six months, a few of these people were bound to be on their period. Our cycles aren’t always on time and vacation might not be in sync with them anyways. Either way, life happens and at Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we understand waxing may need to happen during your time of the month.

The most important thing is not to be embarrassed. Menstruation is completely natural and nothing to be ashamed of, especially in front of an esthetician. With over 20 years of waxing experience, our owner and trained esthetician Ashlene French has seen it all. However, there are some steps you can take before to make it a more pleasant experience for both of you.

About 45 minutes prior to your appointment we suggest popping an ibuprofen tablet such as an Advil 400 and Extra Strength Tylenol. This will help to lessen any pain you may feel during the treatment. During menstruation the body enters an inflammatory state and becomes especially sensitive due to the increase in hormones. Taking a pain reliever ahead of time can alleviate any extra discomfort associated with your period.

Also, it is a good idea to take a quick shower immediately before your appointment and insert a fresh tampon upon your arrival. Wipes will also be provided for your use if you’re unable to shower beforehand. If you do not wear tampons, you’ll need to reschedule your waxing appointment for after your period. Tampon ensure the area remains clean throughout the appointment, making the process possible for your esthetician.

After your appointment is over, do keep in mind the area will be more tender than it normally would be. Be sure to wear loose clothing and allow the area to breathe as much as possible to avoid irritation. This is the only difference waxing on your period makes.
